Artist Statement:
I've gained invaluable tools through my training and work as a graphic designer over the past 18 years, approaching every challenge with my mind open to possibility. My awareness of color, depth, composition and movement has been finely tweaked, no doubt affecting the both the conscious and subconscious processes applied to my paintings. I have also taken some time to chase my dream at playing golf professionally, and through this process learned the intrinsic value of establishing coherence between heart, body & mind.
When this coherence is achieved, a calm clarity overwhelms the body. Anything is possible and nothing can distract the process. In life I would equate this to a meditative mindset, in sports commonly referred to as being "in the zone." All worry, doubt & fear simply melt away, replaced by a rhythmic clarity of communication between heart and mind. While I appreciate the knowledge of being able to "control" being in this state, the moments where it happens naturally are even more powerful & calming. This happens (for me) during the quiet moments, when I allow myself to let go and soak in everything around me, opening up to and absorbing the energy I feel, being completely in the moment unaware of anything else.
This is the feeling I have when I am painting. It is calming in the sense that my focus is poured entirely into the communication between my heart and the paint. I approach a painting without a plan and allow the clarity and focus I feel inside to simply guide me along the way. I let it make the subtle suggestions for color, intensity & movement. I follow it with an unwavering belief and focus, setting the ego and it's distractions aside. I have always been a quiet person, finding it difficult to express in words the depth of emotion and feeling I have inside. For me painting provides the opportunity to outwardly express my inner self, stripped of distractions from the ego. I am in the moment, full of life, a clarity of vision which provides serenity and peace. Each painting I complete is a quiet reminder of the harmony I feel inside my heart during these moments, where my heart, mind, soul and surroundings become one; bringing me one step closer to simply letting go and living life in the moment.
My only wish for others viewing my work is to catch a glimpse of this feeling, to set aside any chaos on their life and simple reflect on their true self... even if it is just for a moment. It is in these moments of calm clarity where we are given the opportunity to see our true self.
